Allan Tannenbaum

Allan Tannenbaum (born 1945) is a renowned photojournalist and art photographer. Born in Passaic, New Jersey and a graduate of Rutgers University, Tannenbaum began by taking photos for his campus newspaper, The Targum.

He then moved to New York City and served as chief photographer and editor of SoHO Weekly News from its inception in 1973 until the publication closed in 1982. His documentation of art, music and nightlife in New York has become iconic, especially his definitive coverage of the burgeoning punk scene of the 1970s.

Tannenbaum’s work has also been published in Newsweek, New York Magazine, Paris Match and Rolling Stone, among others. Since the mid-1980s, he has covered political topics and campaigns both nationally and internationally, including trips to Kuwait and Iraq to document Operation Desert Storm.

He has also exhibited his art photographs at numerous institutions, including the Pushkin Museum in Moscow, the Cité de la musique in Paris and the Govinda Gallery in New York, and published several critically acclaimed photo books such as New York in the 70s(2003) and John & Yoko: A New York Love Story (2007). He still lives and works in New York.
